Can A Home Theater Receiver Fit Into Your Digital Details?

By Edward French

All your other components fail to deliver without a home theater receiver. The central unit is the receiver. You may see it listed by other names like surround sound receiver or just surround sound.

The AV receiver can also be what it's called. Regardless of its given name, what it does is it receives input and has output. In order for you not to have the other components separately, a receiver gathers it all together.

The home theater receiver does the job of the following three: Preamp, Tuner, and multi-channel amplifier. But what if you bought just a receiver and not the other parts? Probably not in the least.

You save money when you buy the receiver that handles all three but you'll still get the same quality if you bought all 3 pieces. Some home theater systems have reached over $40,000 and for people who want to spend thousands, then each component is purchased as a standalone.

So what should you look for in a home theater receiver? Regular receivers are not the same as wireless receivers. You need to know as much as you can before going shopping because you'll get pros and cons with either one.

Now let's talk about wattage. Better if you don't get fooled by the numbers on the receiver box. A high watts number doesn't mean it has the most power or that the sound will be better, regardless of how important watts are.

At a certain point, you get what's called the distortion factor, which means the louder the decibels, the less you can hear what's being played clearly. Made to work with tandem with the other components is the receiver.

Watts isn't the only thing your receiver should be based on. You'll want to make sure you pay attention to what's called the signal to noise ratio. It's the way the background noise is compared to the signal. What you want is the clear sound, not the background noise.

You'll also want to pay attention to a receiver's Total Harmonic Distortion (or THD) because a lower THD lets the amplifier give out a better sound. Before you spend any money on a home theater receiver, do your homework. To make sure that what you're getting is the best money can buy, check the product reviews. Before you buy the receiver, make time to check how they handle.
