By Jade F Zwiener

Do you have Windows 7? If so, you may want to speed this software up. For the most part, computers do not run it optimal speeds out of the box. Sometimes the system comes overloaded with features that you'll never use. In fact, if you have had the computer for a while, if you download programs regularly, these could be slowing your computer down quite a bit. This article will show you several ways to improve Windows 7 in regard to speed and performance.

One really great way to make sure that Windows 7 operates at its most efficient, is to set it to the High Performance setting. This isn't typically the default setting for Windows 7, so you will have to make the change yourself if you want performance to improve. In order to do this, you will need to go to the control panel and choose the "power options" and then "show additional plans." That's where you will find the option to activate the high performance mode. Beyond this, you might want to run your performance troubleshooter which can automatically look for problem areas on your computer and then fix them for you.

You can find this by clicking on your control panel and then typing the word "troubleshooting" into the search box there. You will see something listing "system and security" and that's where you will have the chance to check for performance issues. Active Desktop is a feature that some people like, but if you don't use it, you may want to disable it. This feature allows you to view web pages from your desktop, without having to bring them up via your browser. This is a feature that's useful to some extent, but you could probably live without it. This is a feature that seems cool, but when you think about it, how long does it really take to bring up a web page? If you have one site that you want to see quickly, another option is to make that one your home page. Windows 7 comes with certain default colors; by resetting your desktop background to a solid color, you'll be freeing up memory. You can reset the colors by choosing "personalize" on your desktop options. Measures like choosing a solid color will probably speed up your computer a bit, and when combined with other changes, you'll notice a real difference.

Fonts are very fun to use, and many come with Windows 7 - unfortunately these become clutter on your computer. With over 125 fonts, there are many to choose from, most of which are never used by anyone. Excessive amounts of fonts on Windows can actually slow down programs like Word. Although the fonts do not take up that much memory, they can slow the boot time considerably. Additional fonts are usually added by people who do not realize that it will slow the computer down. You can improve your computer's boot time and performance are removing these fonts from your system. Windows programs that use particular fonts will definitely use some of them so don't remove them all. It is important that you do not remove fonts that you use on a regular basis.

To improve the speed of Windows 7, you'll need to explore some different features and settings that you have on your computer. Most people waste a lot of their space and memory with programs, features and files that they do not actually need. Sometimes serious problems will slow down your computer so a registry cleaner could be just the ticket. These are just a few things that can help you get a good start on truly speeding up the performance of your Windows 7 PC.
